President John Dramani Mahama has directed the creation of an inter-agency task force to strengthen Ghana’s fight against drug trafficking through the country’s borders and ports.
The directive follows the seizure in France of nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, valued at about US$261 million, from a container that had been shipped from Ghana. French authorities intercepted the shipment at the port of Dunkirk on September 10, 2026.
Following an urgent meeting with security chiefs, President Mahama has given the newly formed task force two weeks to prepare a detailed roadmap outlining measures to tighten border controls and prevent Ghana from being used as a route for illegal drugs.
Authorities have also disclosed that 10 people, including four Customs officers of the Ghana Revenue Authority, are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The task force is expected to look at security gaps at Ghana’s ports and borders and recommend stronger systems for detecting and stopping narcotics trafficking.
