Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that the Ghanaian government spent GH¢33.72 million to evacuate Ghanaian citizens from South Africa following xenophobic attacks.
According to the Minister, the evacuation was carried out to protect Ghanaians who were affected or at risk during the attacks.
Mr. Ablakwa further revealed that GH¢16 million of the total cost was provided as corporate support by Engineers & Planners, a company owned by businessman Ibrahim Mahama.
The disclosure has brought attention to both the government's efforts to protect Ghanaian citizens abroad and the role of private-sector support in assisting during emergencies.
The Foreign Affairs Minister says the intervention was necessary to ensure the safety and return of affected Ghanaian citizens.
